Recycling Computers and Other Equipment

What an ugly photograph!!!  This month we want to do our part to limit the amount of electronic equipment ending up in a land-fill.

Do you have a lot of old computers, monitors and various sizes of disks laying around your home or office?  Rest assured, you are not alone!  We have seen a lot of those items during the past few weeks.  And if you have been wondering how to safely dispose of them we have some resources for you.

In Cuyahoga County, August is Recycle Your Computer Month.  This event is sponsored by the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste Management District twice a year in an effort to raise awareness of recycling computers as well as any peripheral devices.  These other devices include printers, modems, cables, and software.  So instead of all of these things going into a land-fill, they will be "de-manufactured or refurbished".  Computers that are able to be refurbished will be donated to schools.  Although some communities accept these items year around, others will only do so during August; some offer curb-side pick up service.  For a list of the specifics for your community, just follow this link.

If you do not want to set your computer on the curb for pick-up by just anyone, or if you prefer to drop off your computer and/or other equipment during another month, then check out RET3, a non-profit job corp located on the east side of Cleveland.  They offer a daily drop off at their facility

1814 East 40th

Cleveland, Ohio

8AM to 3PM Monday thru Friday

Follow this link to see what they will accept, which is pretty inclusive---just not TVs.  Take some time to check out their website and learn how you can erase your hard-drive, or yours could be one of the 500 hard drives that they erase each month.

Destroying large amounts of data certainly raises a lot of questions on security about the data on your home computer, but even more so when you own a home based business or a larger corporation. One of our fellow business partners at the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association is Great Lakes Computer Corporation.  They provide computer maintenance and network management services for businesses.  Read their 5 Data Protection Questions (And Answers) for more information on the subject and what your organization should do to protect data.

We hope that you are enjoying your summer,
