Maximizing Your Closets

If you are having trouble in the morning deciding what to wear due to our crazy weather patterns, join the club!  Sometimes I find myself changing clothes mid-day!  These last few days of nice weather are a great time to prepare for the layers you will soon need.

Many of our clients complain they cannot find their clothes when they need them, lose items in their closets and are surprised when they find items with the tags still on them!  The volume of clothes in a closet is usually due to clothes for all seasons being in the closet year round.

We highly recommend changing the main closet for the seasons.  This is, of course, difficult if there is no other storage space available in your home or apartment.  However, storing out of season clothes in tubs and under-bed containers does not take up as much room as you might think!  If you do not already own plastic medium sized storage tubs, invest in a few (we prefer clear to see what is in them), and give this a try. You may also like these soft sided ones that can be folded away when not in use.

Transfer "like" things together to your boxes; shorts and summer pants in one, shirts in another.  As you do this, use this process as a time to review what you have worn and not worn recently.  Donate those items you no longer use or love. We suggest adding a few cedar blocks to the bin to keep things fresh and dry while in storage.  Lastly, attach a label to the outside for easy identification.  By sorting your clothes while putting them away for the season, they are ready to drop back into their proper place when the seasons change back!

Another consideration is whether or not the clothes in your closet actually present the image you wish to present to others.  Is your wardrobe stale or does not include the right clothes for your current job or lifestyle?  First impressions are very important, so consider calling our friend Traci McBride (440.670.0440) at Tee McBee Image Consulting for some advice!  She will even shop with you if needed!

Shoe storage is another challenge for many - under the bed storage containers for shoes are easily found in the same department as plastic containers.  Shopping bags with handles are an inexpensive solution for shoes as well.  Put them in an attic or basement or hang them on hooks in a closet.

A few other closet tips include; use hooks on doors and walls to add extra vertical hanging space, and consider verticle storage options for purses, scarves and even socks!  All of these simple things can maximize the space in small closets.

We hope these simple storage ideas will help you have a sleeker closet and save you time in finding the right thing to wear each day.  Questions on storage needs?  Don't hesitate to give us a call at one of the numbers listed below!
