Is Your Kitchen In Shape for the Holidays?

Already it's November and we are scratching our heads wondering how it happend this fast!  Now things will get really busy until the end of the year.  And we know that some of that busy-ness includes a lot of cooking and baking.  Is your kitchen ready?  No wonder November is Clean Out Your Refrigerator Month!  That seems like a good place to start....

To organize your refrigerator, we suggest that you pick one shelf at a time and place all of the containers on a counter or table.  You will likely find something you forgot you stored in there, or duplicates of other items.  Be sure to check the expiration dates to guide you in discarding things.  Also ask yourself if you will actually be using any of the remaining food any time soon.  Maybe you can incorporate something into a recipe or offer it to someone else who could use it.  Once you have cleaned off the shelf, and you return items, consider some of these tips:

  • Place taller items in the back
  • Place more frequently used items in the front
  • Consider grouping like items together, ie all left-overs on one shelf, all condiments stored together, etc

Once you have completed each shelf and drawer, you will feel like you have a new refrigerator and you will be able to find things quickly.

Next, take a look at your cupboards and drawers.  Have you stored like items together?  Are all of your dishes near the dishwasher or sink?  Are all of your spices close to where you will be using them?  Are all of your utensils close by and easy to find?  If the answer to any of these questions is "NO" then follow the steps outlined above to clear out one drawer or one shelf at a time.  Need some inspiration?  Here are some before and after photos to guide you:

Keep in mind:

  • Store seldom used items further away
  • Store like items together, such as spices, baking supplies, canned goods
  • Measure before purchasing any type of product you see above

Finally, let's take a look at your counters.  Do you like the look of a clean countertop?  Are you short on cupboard space, and need to keep some items on the counter?  To clear up some cupboard space, consider storing larger items that are rarely used in another area of the home such as in a pantry, or on a shelf in a closet or the basement.  We find that this works well for roasting pans, bread machines and crock pots.

Keep in mind:

  • It's OK to have items on the countertop
  • Store items close to the area where you will be using them
  • Allow for food preparation spaces

We believe that organizing is all about being able to quickly find the items you need when you need them.  By following some of our suggestions above, you should be able to quickly assess anything you may need for your holiday preparations and have an enjoyable kitchen in which you can be creative!
